Road 60 Tunnel

Excavation commences in Jerusalem

The excavation works for the new Road 60 Tunnel has just started. The project is located at the intersection of Highway 60 and Highway 375 in the city of Jerusalem.

The 3-lane tunnel will have a total length of approximately 1 km and an excavated area of 190 m2. The main challenges of this project are the close vicinities to the existing tunnel (less than 3 m) and the very poor ground conditions for over more than half of the alignment.

In order to mitigate the risk of damaging the existing tunnel, the excavation will be carried-out in 4 stages, firstly the side drifts, then the top-heading and finally, the benching. Face bolting, pipe umbrella and closed invert will be installed in order to ensure the stability of the excavation.
