The challenge of Bondo

The landslide of Pizzo Cengalo

After the rockslide at Piz Cengalo at the end of August, some 700,000 m3 of material flowed into the valley floor in several debris flow surges. This has led to extensive debris flow deposits and evacuation of the village of Bondo in the Bergell valley in southern Grisons. Operations are under way since September to remove the material using large excavators and dumper trucks and dump it in two landfills. On peak days, up to 14,000 m3 of material is removed. The Pini-Straub team is overseeing work, offering its extensive experience in large landfills, particularly in the areas of geotechnics (stability) and rheology (liquefaction).
