Snowy 2.0

Australia

The biggest renewable energy project under construction in Australia.

Project

Snowy 2.0 is the biggest renewable energy project under construction in Australia. Upon commissioning, it will add 2200 megawatts of dispatchable, on-demand renewable energy and approximately 350,000 megawatt hours of large-scale storage to the existing scheme and the nation’s Electricity Market. The Snowy hydro-owned project involves linking two existing Snowy Mountains Scheme reservoirs, Tantangara and Talbingo, through 27km of tunnels and building a new underground power station at approximately 800m depth.

Snowy 2.0 is vital to Australia’s economy and energy transmission by providing massive storage and generation needed to balance the growth of wind and solar power and the retirement of Australia’s ageing thermal power stations. Snowy 2.0 will underpin the stability of Australia’s energy system as it moves into a low-emissions future.
