Remarkable in terms of material technology and sustainability is the refurbishment of the Viadotto Fornaci, which was built in 1967 between Melide and Gentilino. To strengthen the roadway slab, an ultra-high performance fibre-reinforced concrete (UHFB) is being used over the entire length of 330 metres. Its composition makes the UHFB denser and harder than conventional concrete and the risk of cracking is reduced. UHFB has high compressive and tensile strength and can be applied much thinner than normal concrete. This reduces material consumption and puts less burden on the existing support structure.
The works planned between 2020 and 2021 are demanding and are all organised from a suspended platform. This scaffold is operated by two cranes, which are equipped with special safety mechanisms to prevent accidents with traffic on the motorway.
